CreativeMornings Mumbai with Hari & Deepti

Hari & Deepti, a Mumbai-based husband-and-wife artist duo, create works that are rich with stories and imagination. Through their intricate paper cut light boxes and paper clay sculptures, they bring these narratives to life.

Drawn to the imaginative possibilities of storytelling, they believe that stories hold countless layers and depth—and paper, as a medium, is perfectly suited to express these qualities.

Their creative journey began in 2010 with the use of cut shadow boxes and hand-painted watercolor paper, carefully assembled in wooden frames to create dioramas. Over the years, their art has evolved, becoming both more intricate and minimalist. They began experimenting with light, simplifying their designs by removing the color from the paper. Eventually, they developed their signature style, incorporating back-lit light boxes with flexible LED strips.

For them, paper is not just a medium, but a reverent tool of creation: “What amazes us about paper cut light boxes is the stark contrast between their lit and unlit states. The effect is almost mystical—it draws the viewer into a world of wonder.” They view paper as a challenging yet beautifully versatile medium: “Paper is brutally simple yet deeply compelling. It demands the artist’s focus, yet offers the softness needed to mold it into something extraordinary. It is playful, light, both colorless and vibrant, minimal and intricate all at once. It reflects light, creates depth, and builds illusions, guiding the artist on a journey filled with endless possibilities.”
