Akkarai Sisters
Akkarai Sisters, S Subhalakshmi and S Sornalatha, are acclaimed musicians, celebrated for their soulful music that has captured hearts worldwide. They are disciples of Akkarai Shri S Swamynathan, Shri V Janakiraman, Shri O V Subramanian, Padmabhushan Shri P S Narayanaswamy, and Chitravina N Ravikiran.
From child prodigies, they have ascended to the forefront of the music world, excelling in vocal and violin duets and accompanying eminent artists. Their collaborations span various genres, including Hindustani, Jazz, and Western Classical. Sornalatha is also a talented composer in Tamil, Telugu, and Sanskrit.
Their accolades include Subhalakshmi’s Rajiv Gandhi Yuva Puraskar, Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar (2007), and Sornalatha’s gold medal from the University of Madras, among others. Subhalakshmi was recognized by The Week magazine as one of India’s 50 most promising individuals. They’ve received awards such as Shanmukha Sangeetha Shiromani and Yuva Purandara.
Subhalakshmi attained the A-top Grade at All India Radio and Doordarshan in 2019, becoming the youngest violinist to do so. They were also honored with the prestigious Tamilnadu State Government Award “KALAIMAMANI” in 2019. Additionally, they are esteemed teachers, sharing their knowledge and experience with students worldwide.
