Comment sections, photo captions, and 150 character limitations – the spaces we increasingly look to in order to parse sentiments as contained by the written word somehow balance being both frustratingly bounded and rich in nuance. As a mirror, Karshni’s music and lyrics present an interlocking structure of metaphor and meaning, as abstract as they are telling. Her work began as a sort of score for earlier diary entries, but as an audience began to form around this work – mostly on Instagram – it soon became a source of employment both as a songwriter for herself, but also others – an indication of how the language she has crafted is understood by a burgeoning audience.
