Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (The World is Family) by Anand Patwardhan | Screening
‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, a Sanskrit phrase meaning “the world is family” is an ancient universalist idea that competes with exclusivist notions of caste.
The director, Anand Patwardhan, grew up in a family that had fought for India’s freedom but had rarely spoken about it. Today, as majoritarian ideologues rewrite India’s history, what started as a home movie has become more precious than mere personal nostalgia.
Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (The World is Family) was awarded Best Editing at the International Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) in 2023. In 2024, it won Best Feature Documentary at the New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) and Best Long Documentary at the International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK). The film has officially qualified for the first round of the Academy Awards (Oscars) 2024, under the Documentary Feature Film category.
Join us at the warehouse to witness this documentary gold, followed by a conversation with the filmmaker who has remained a voice of reason, fighting against all odds through his camera and cinema.
