A group of Western Classical musicians from around India will come together with Yo-Yo Ma to rehearse a new string ensemble arrangement by Indian pianist and conductor Parvesh Java of celebrated Mumbai-based composer Vanraj Bhatia’s piece “Reverie”. Not open to the public.

Pop-up Outdoor Performance

In a special informal performance, Yo-Yo Ma will pop-up at an iconic location in the city to play a selection from Bach’s suites for solo cello, in the spirit of reflection on Mumbai’s past and future. Free and open to the public.

Yo-Yo Ma joins filmmaker Nandita Das and Carnatic vocalist, author, and activist TM Krishna to discuss culture’s role in Mumbai, India, and the world, moderated by global cultural theorist Homi K. Bhabha. What role does cultural creativity play in a time where communities are divided by ideologies of exclusion and division? How do the arts shape our senses so that we can create a culture of civic life that respects and nurtures the diverse and plural sensibilities of those with whom we share the planet? A New Conversation 2019: Performances
G5A, Mahalaxmi | 4:00PM – Late
Artists and culture-makers from throughout Mumbai come together to celebrate and explore how culture connects us across identities and genres. In a unique event of performances that activates G5A’s many spaces, in a resuscitated warehouse in the mill district of Central Mumbai, spoken word artists, theatre-makers, food and pop-ups, and local musicians come together to put inclusive art into action, and showcase its power to catalyze change. The creative culmination of the three-day collaborative residency, बेबाक Bebak (Hindi for “Fearless”), will close the evening. Co-produced by G5A Foundation for Contemporary Culture.
