“Rape drains the light.” These are the words that begin Sohaila’s timely, yet timeless, journey through this dark issue. “I want to let some light back in.”

And she does. Through conversations with rape survivors on five continents. (Is rape always a life-defining event?) Through questions, nuanced yet probing. (Is rape related to desire?) By digging deep into the subterranean layer where long-held silences demand answers spoken out loud. (Who gets raped? Who rapes? Is one rape worse than another?)

Writing from the perspective of a survivor, writer, counsellor and activist, Sohaila looks at what we talk about when we talk about rape – and what we don’t talk about. (Is rape worse than death? How do you recover your sense of self, freedom and joy? )

Sohaila Abdulali was born in Mumbai. She graduated from Brandeis University and did her master’s at Stanford University. Sohaila has written two novels, children’s books and short stories. She lives in New York with her family.
