in conversation with Konkona Sen Sharma | a death in the gunj

“The story was like a jigsaw puzzle that I kept trying to figure out and solve”

A Death in the Gunj is a beautifully crafted film about grappling with one’s place in the world. We follow Shutu as he struggles to fulfill one specific, and expected, mould. He feels out of place and at a distance even with his family. This is compounded by the loss of his father and leaves him confused, listless, and, after a sequence of events, desperate.

This was based on a true story that director Konkona Sen Sharma has lived and grown up hearing about. Her treatment of the story provides us with a gauzy and gentle lens where each character’s actions lead us directly to the film’s final conclusion.

Award-winning actress, Konkona Sen Sharma, though known for her on-screen performances, has a prolific background in writing, production, and theatre. She has written and directed films in Hindi, Bengali, and English, winning multiple awards for her work in India and internationally.
