KINGSHIP AND THE ASCETIC IDEAL IN CLASSICAL INDIAN LITERATURES
Arshia Sattar and Samhita Arni
Moderated by Indira Chandrashekhar
The great narrative texts of both northern and southern India explore the tension between spiritual and temporal power. In them, we meet kings who admire ascetics and sages, we have princes who give up the throne and go in search of a truth that lies beyond the world in which they live. This conversation foregrounds the fact of the rivalry between priests and kings and explores its possible sources.
