ragas and ragams

A Session with Chandana Bala Kalyan

Hindustani and Carnatic Music have been two of the most ancient and unique forms in the Indian music tradition, and while there have been instances where one has borrowed from the other, the challenge for Chandana, was to juxtapose them in a manner that they can blend seamlessly. Hence the idea of ‘Ragas and Ragams’.

Through her practice, her attempt has always been towards understanding and interpreting different styles of music. There are times when we often overlook the styles closest to us, and therefore this was her take in exploring and finding the median between Hindustani and Carnatic Music.

G5A forum is proud to present morning riyaaz, a series of concerts featuring artists from different schools of music. Through this series, we hope to revive the relevance of pre-dawn discipline and invite audiences to experience the nuances within Indian music.

This session we have Chandana Bala Kalyan, a Carnatic music vocalist, who also explores and practices other genres of music, performing along with Rajesh Srinivasan on Mridangam and Abhaya Nayampally on the electric guitar.
